Well, that past actually has a lot to do with Kiryu, as it turns out Lau Ka Long is a fake name, and this is actually Chau Ka Long. For those who might not know or don’t remember, Chau Ka Long was the head of the Snake Flower Triad who was a boss fight in Kiwami. He reappears as another boss fight in Yakuza 3, only to get fatally shot.
That's what happens when you binge an entire series, stuff starts getting jumbled. Ryuji did give kiryu some issues as well though. Their fight was closer than I would've thought given Kiryu is practically super human. It's kinda funny they had 2 games in a row where the villain had similarities to Kiryu back to back.
And it would be odd that Kiryu would continue to use an amalgamated style if Classic was just superior. Since we're not getting 3-5 Kiwami, we'll never really know.
